National Simplicity Day
July 12th marks the annual celebration of National Simplicity Day which also honors Henry David Thoreau, a transcendentalist. The goal of this day is to promote a life that is based on simplicity and also commemorate the life of Henry David Thoreau. There is no denying that we live in an extremely fast-paced world and have immensely busy lives, this day can serve as an opportunity to halt and take a step back and evaluate what is truly important.
Ways to Observe National Simplicity Day
- Pinpoint what things in life are important to you and prioritize them. You can do this in multiple aspects of your life to simplify things even more. For example, you can identify the top five goals you have, the top five concepts you live by, the top three things that consume your time, and so forth to get a true sense of what takes up your life.
- Declutter your house. This is quite simple, but one easy way to simplify your life is by practicing minimalism and getting rid of everything that simply takes up space. Think about it, that shirt that has been in your closet untouched for three years can mean the world to someone — donate it!
- Think through your purchases. In today’s consumer culture it can be easy to get too excited about buying new things and get carried away with impulse buying. Remember to only get what you need. One way to help accomplish this is to create specific lists with items that you need to buy and only buy those items. By practicing mindful shopping not only are you leading to less clutter, but the environment and your bank account will also thank you!
- Be simple with your intentions. Don’t forget that simplicity can be practiced in many ways and that it can start from the inside. Be honest and upfront with your intentions with anyone and everyone and do not waste other people’s time. Remember that everyone matters and value them.
- Read books on the topic of simplicity such as The More of Less by Joshua Becker, Walden by Henry David Thoreau, or Mindful Simplicity by Yolanda Acree.
- Remember that it is okay to say no. Life can get overwhelming and you need to remember that you do not need to say yes all the time and participate in everything. To live a more simple life remember to engage in activities that matter most to you and to take time to regroup. Go on a walk alone, meditate, spend a day doing nothing, treat yourself to a day focused on you!
All in all, make this day an opportunity to stop and assess your life. Try to regroup and prioritize everything that is in your life in order for you to be able to achieve a more simple life. Do not be afraid to declutter and get rid of things! Learn to be you. As Lao Tzu stated “I have just three things to teach: simplicity, patience, compassion. These three are your greatest treasures.” Remember to always treat others exceptionally well with compassion and patience.
